005: unbranded conversations with Funke Bucknor-Obruthe [part 2]
in this conversation with Funke Bucknor [FBO], we talk about life before events, the evolution of the events industry, mending broken client relationships, working with friends, pricing, and more.
Dear You,
We all had things we dreamed about becoming while growing up. Some of us were forced, some of us were not. Shonda Rhimes [writer of Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, etc.] wanted to be Toni Morrison, but she became Shonda - Founder of Shondaland. I remember growing up and wanting to be a Doctor, but now I am in the branding and communications universe, contributing my quota to the world. For Funke Bucknor-Obruthe [FBO], she wanted to be a lawyer [you can find out why by watching this episode], but she ended up becoming the Founder and CEO of her own events company, Zapphire Events. Some of us are living a dream beyond our imagination, which is beautiful.
I particularly like this part of the conversation with FBO because she shared her journey from law to events and how she did it for a while before she put a price tag on it. I asked her how she made her first million, and I don’t even think you are ready for that answer. This episode focused on the business side of her life, how she mended broken relationships with clients who were very dissatisfied with an event they planned, how she successfully works with friends, what she looks out for in the vendors she works with, and so many things in between. In the last episode, we talked about her bond with her sister. We had a very vulnerable conversation about her personal life [If you missed it, catch up here], but this conversation is slightly different. You get to see a different side of her, and if you are planning to build a business, there’s so much you can learn from this conversation. If you have friends who work in the events industry or are founders/business owners, you should send this episode to them. They’ll thank you for it.

With Love,
